Cupid and the Line Dance That Conquered the World

When people marvel at how 803Fresh's 'Boots on the Ground' turned a Southern Soul record into a national line dance, they're describing a playbook a Louisiana singer wrote nearly two decades earlier.

Bryson Bernard, better known as Cupid, released 'Cupid Shuffle' in 2007. Built from the ground up as a teachable, everybody-can-do-it line dance, it went double platinum, earned an Atlantic Records deal, and in 2008 set a Guinness World Record for the largest line dance when more than 17,000 people did it together in Atlanta. It still turns up at weddings, cookouts, and stadium jumbotrons around the world.

What makes it a Southern Soul story is the DNA: a Louisiana soul-blues artist, a communal grown-folks groove, and a dance floor as the distribution channel. Cupid proved a record from this world could go fully mainstream without losing its roots.
